Bowel screening invitations expand to people aged 59

Northern Ireland’s screening programme begins inviting 59-year-olds from Monday, with a further phased reduction in the starting age planned.

Northern Ireland’s Bowel Cancer Screening Programme begins inviting people aged 59 from Monday 2 November, the Business Services Organisation has confirmed.

People aged 58 are due to join from April 2027. The programme is intended to expand in stages until it covers eligible people aged 50 to 74 by 2031.

BSO’s Family Practitioner Services team operates the call-and-recall service that supports invitations. The announcement confirms the start date and age groups, but does not provide a first-day total for invitations sent.

Screening invitations depend on current GP registration details, so people in the eligible age group should make sure their practice has the correct address.
