£1.1m walking and cycling scheme to start between Newcastle and Castlewellan
Work on a 1.7km section of the A50 is scheduled from 9 November, with daytime restrictions and a temporary 40mph limit.
The Department for Infrastructure has announced a £1.1 million walking and cycling improvement scheme between Newcastle and Castlewellan, due to start on Monday 9 November.
The work covers approximately 1.7 kilometres of the A50 Castlewellan Road/Newcastle Road between Sawmill Road and Carrigs Road. The department says it will complete an improved route for people walking, wheeling and cycling between the towns.
Lane closures and temporary signals are planned between 9.30am and 4.30pm. Footways will close temporarily at different stages, and a temporary 40mph limit is planned throughout the works.
DfI expects around 25 weeks of work and gives summer 2027 as its completion target. These are the department’s announced plans; this report does not establish that construction has begun.
Road users should allow extra journey time, follow temporary signs and approach the works cautiously. The announcement does not provide a stage-by-stage schedule for the footway closures.
